Following the "Low" and "The Trouble With Love" releases in America, a brand new Kelly single was released, entitled "Breakaway," co-written by Avril Lavigne with Bridget Benenate and Matthew Gerrard (who co-wrote "Lost Without You" for Delta Goodrem) for her debut album. Kelly was approached with the song by Disney, who had chosen the song as the theme to their second Princess Diaries film, "A Royal Engagement," and she connected with the lyrics, so arranged for the single to be on both the soundtrack, and her own second album. Despite hitting US radio in mid 2004, the song took a few months to get warmed up, before it climbed all the way to #6, hitting #1 (and staying there for 22 weeks) on Adult Contemporary charts, leading to a commercial CD release in Australia, where it reached #10, backed by Jesse McCartney's "Because You Live" as the B-side. The song was never released outside of these regions until 2006, nearly two years later, when it was the fifth single from "Breakaway" in the UK, and the fourth in most of Europe, backed by a video of Kelly performing the song live in London. |
