Britney talks to “Vogue” about Kenzo

Britney Spears has one not-so-fond memory of the 1980s. “I used to wear big bows on top of my head,” she says on the eve of the debut of her first luxury fashion campaign (it’s hard to believe there’s something she hasn’t done). “I mean, ugly was the way to go in the ’80s, it was all just completely obnoxious—but there was also something so refreshing about that and the fact that we didn’t care what anyone thought about our clothes.” When Spears was approached by Kenzo’s creative directors, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, about becoming the face of the label’s second nostalgia-based La Collection Momento for Spring 2018 (a tribute to the debut of Kenzo Jeans in 1986), she was excited by the prospect of bringing back that loud, no-holds-barred, ’80s attitude.

The bright campaign was shot on location in Los Angeles by Peter Lindbergh and features pieces like a cropped denim jacket, thigh-high lace-up boots, and a sweatshirt and baseball hat stamped with a throwback version of the original Kenzo logo. “This collection is very youthful,” says Spears. “We had fun on set, even though it was a bit weird for me at first. I am used to shooting in a studio or a small space, and this was on the street. We were out there and I had really promiscuous clothes on, which felt odd, but, of course, on film it turned out to be really cool.”

Let us not forget that Spears is a 36-year-old working mom of two. The days of schoolgirl miniskirts and red vinyl catsuits are far behind her, and she tends to gravitate toward more practical, bohemian-inspired clothing, mostly in a palette of soft ivory and white. “It’s tricky because as a mother, you don’t take as much risk with your style,” she says. “I think when I was younger I took so many risks and really went for it. There was no planning what I wore, and it was like, okay, I am just going to put on the most outrageous thing. I think as a mother you hold back from that out of fear of embarrassing your kids and out of respect for them.”

When Spears is home with her boys, Sean and Jayden, she is “in a nightgown most of the time.” And while she may not be wearing things like meat dresses or thongs on the red carpet, she does say that “there is something very courageous about the younger generation just wearing whatever they want all the time, but I don’t know if I could do it at this point. I think I would go and hide under a rug or something, because I’ve been dressing a certain way the past 15 years and I wouldn’t know how to react to a big change.”

Luckily the Kenzo campaign has given Spears a new outlook on embracing more playfulness in her current wardrobe. And playfulness, after all, is something that comes naturally to her—just watch one of her incredible Instagram videos featuring her own idiosyncratic version of a runway walk. The giant hair bows might be long gone, but Spears is not afraid to step out of her comfort zone and get experimental. And her sons sometimes give her the confidence she needs to mix things up. Watching them wear things that clash or have wild prints, she says, is “intoxicating because you are like, You know what? I’m not going to care what I wear today.” She adds, “As a mother, I used to be very strict about what they wore, but, at this point, they are growing up and becoming their own people. I want them to do their own thing — I respect that.”

It’s always great working with you to bring our ideas, like Fantasy in Bloom, and all our fragrances to life. When I was getting ready this evening, my sons were like, ‘Mom, are you going to the Oscars?’ I said, ‘Well, it’s kind of like the Oscars, and I won the biggest award there.’ They were jumping up and down, and I felt really proud—but they were just ready to get my ass out of the house!

“Anyways, I also want to thank the Hollywood Beauty Awards for this amazing honour; thank you so much and I am so excited to be working with you on all the new projects. HBA, shall I tell my sons we have a date for this time next year?”

Britney talks to the Bangok Post

Britney spoke to the Bangkok Post ahead of her recent shows in Thailand:

Your concert in Bangkok seems long overdue. Was there ever an attempt made to have you perform here before?

It’s been a while since I was last in Asia, I don’t think we’ve ever discussed a show in Bangkok in the past. I’m very excited to perform in Thailand for the first time!

Your fans in Thailand are so excited about your concert! Have you seen the parody version of your Toxic music video by a Thai party organiser which recently went viral? What do you think of it?

I have seen it, and I thought they did a great job!

Is this concert basically an extension of your Vegas residency? Will the audience here in Thailand experience what it would have been like to watch you in Vegas?

Definitely! I wanted to bring a taste of my Vegas show to Asia for the fans that haven’t been able to make it to Vegas.

We’ve seen you as a judge on the American version of X Factor. Are you planning to do it again anytime soon?

I enjoyed my time on X Factor, but no, I don’t have plans to do anything like it again.

How’s working on the next album going? Any chance it will be released this year?

I’m constantly working on music, but no plans to release anything this year.

You’ve got a Vegas residency until the end of the year and you’re touring Asia. How do you juggle this hectic schedule along with being a mum? Are your kids going along with you on tour?

It’s hard being away from them, but I make sure we speak at least once a day. They do travel with me when they’re out of school.

Is there anything in particular that you’re looking forward to trying or experiencing in Thailand?

I hear the massages are amazing!

Can you name one artist/band who’s on your collaboration wishlist? Why do you want to work with him/her/them?

Beyonce. She’s so fierce and her music is amazing.

Anything you want to say to your Thai fans?
I love you and can’t wait to see you at my shows!

Britney talks to Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot

What’s it like to be Britney Spears?

I’m in denial that I am a celebrity sometimes. My wish is to be private, deep inside, which I am, I believe. Fame is way too much for me, as it’s really hard to grasp its size. When you’re young and in the beginning of your career, it’s understandable when you’ve just stepped into this world. But when you grow up and you look at the industry, you’re like ‘huh? that’s crazy.’ I have moments where I just want to dress up like a normal person and walk in the street. It goes through my mind a lot.

If you could give the 16-year-old Britney one piece of advice, what would it be?

Simply – enjoy the moment. That’s something that’s really hard to understand when you’ve started young in this business.

And that’s something you didn’t do.

Not really. I think I had fun when I was younger. I was a pretty normal girl, a tomboy. But my 20’s were awful. My 30’s are much better for me. I’ve know myself better.

What did you do wrong in your 20’s?

I think I should have given myself more breaks through my career and taken responsibility for my mental health. There were many decisions that were made for me and that I didn’t make myself.

You were “Overprotected”…

Something like that. My life was controlled by many people and that doesn’t really let you be yourself. In that situation, when you’re not in control, the excitement fades and there’s less passion when it comes to music. I wrote that I was lost and didn’t know what to do with myself, back then. I was trying to please everyone around me because that is who I am deep inside. There are moments where I look back and think ‘What the hell was I thinking?’

Like the snake in the “Slave” VMA performance?

That was pretty scary. Stupid even. I wouldn’t do that again.

When were you the toughest on yourself?

The more exact question is when am I not?

In one of the more memorable moments of your career, you were seen driving with baby Sean on your lap, which turned into world news. You then blamed the paparazzi and confessed that you were very stressed.

Those were the toughest years. I think the paparazzi took the pressure away when I didn’t leave my house for two years.

I asked her if that was her biggest crisis in life, and she replies:
Crisis is a strong word.

Each and every one of us that starts at a young age in the industry has to take into account that you’ve got to have balance in order to stay in it and to manage your personal life. Sometimes that’s very challenging. I think I was very different back then, when I was younger, not always knowing what was good or bad. I was very instinctive. Today I’m at a better place in my life. My kids have shaped my personality and fulfilled me. They’ve made me forget about what was happening to me.

If you could be unknown for a day and not have the paparazzi around, where would you go and what would you do?

If I answer honestly, people would know where to find me. I’ll just tell you that my last Google search was ‘cool beaches to take kids to.’

Is it harder for you in the pop industry that includes names like Beyonce, Rihanna and Taylor Swift?

I don’t see it how you see it, in terms of competition between singers. I think we need to support each other from a place of female empowerment.

Is it harder for you to create hits compared to when you started?

The musical world is just much more accessible to everyone.

And here she is today, right after her ninth studio album ‘Glory’ that came out last year and sent her touring. On July 3rd she’ll arrive in Tel Aviv for a concert at Hayarkon Park that is expected to host 50,000 people.
I’m very excited to visit Israel for the first time.

And you were not asked to avoid coming by a political group or singer asked you not to come?
I only heard good things about Israel actually.

Our readers chose “Oops!.. I Did It Again,” “…Baby One More Time” and “Born To Make You Happy” as your best hits, do you agree?

I love those songs but I have a few other favourites. And I don’t get tired of any of my songs!

After you lose 3 kg, what’s your guilty pleasure?

It changes, but it’s usually Sunday chocolate.

Not bad. By the way, in Carpool Karaoke you said you were over men. Is that true?

Now that was a joke!

Britney’s letter to the LGBTQ community

This is my letter of love to all my LGBTQ fans. Continuously throughout my career, you’ve always been so vocal about what a positive impact I’ve had on you — that I’ve instilled joy, hope and love in you at times when there was none. That my music is an inspiration. That my story gives you hope.

But I have a secret to share with you. You see, it’s actually you that lifts me up. The unwavering loyalty. the lack of judgment. The unapologetic truth. Acceptance! Your stories are what inspire me, bring me joy and make me and my sons strive to be better people.

I love you.
